The
Australian Government is now prioritizing the repatriation efforts of a
teenager 14 years, who was detained in Indonesia for possession of
marijuana (cannabis). The teenager was still classified as a minor so it is considered not deserve to be punished like an adult.
According
to ABC news station, the priority was announced Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Australia, Kevin Rudd, on Thursday local time. He sent Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty, to fly from Jakarta to Bali, where the teenager was arrested.
"I
indicated to him [Moriarty] that the current number one priority is to
provide assistance to adolescents and their families as well as trying
your best to be repatriated to Australia," Rudd told reporters in
Sydney.
Teenagers, who was unnamed, was arrested at Denpasar police station as soon as he arrived on Tuesday. He preached to buy marijuana from a man in Kuta Beach. Derived from Morrisset Park in northern Sydney, the teenager was in Bali in order to vacation with her parents.
Teenager's
lawyer, Muhammad Rifan, revealed that his client could have faced up to
six years in adult prison when a judge declared him guilty has 7 grams
of marijuana. Under Indonesian law, marijuana possession cases as dire as heroin and cocaine.
Rifan revealed that his client was upset, crying, and depression since detained. He can be detained up to 30 days to await trial. According
to lawyers, police officers had violated procedures because the parents
did not allow his client attend the inspection.
Therefore, the police agreed to question the suspect again this Friday and requested she undergo a urine test.
Meanwhile,
Julian McMahon, a lawyer from Australia who defend the citizens of the
State two kangaroos were in Bali for smuggling heroin in 2005, the judge
need not worry that teenagers must face a maximum sentence of six years
in prison.
According
to Australian media, the teenager is the youngest Australian citizen
who was detained in Indonesia related to drug possession case.
According
to The Sydney Morning Herald today's edition, the teenager confessed to
the police were forced to buy marijuana worth Rp250.000 pity because
the seller, who claimed not to eat for a day.
