China has banned a traditional carnival event which showcases cutting and eating dog meat. The ban is responding to public protests, which did not like seeing animals being tortured.
According to government news agency, Xinhua, the carnival takes place every October in Qianxi City, Zhejiang province. Carnival in Qianxi regularly held since 600 years ago to celebrate the victory of the local tribes of the battle.
"The celebration was changed to the modern commodity fairs in the 1980s. But the tradition of eating dog meat is maintained," Xinhua reported Wednesday, as quoted by Reuters news agency.
In recent years, the owners of the kiosks show dog slaughter in public. "This is to show that dog meat was still fresh, not preserved in the refrigerator, thereby reducing the buyer's concerns," said Xinhua.
