"Angel of Death" Argentina imprisoned for Life

Former high-ranking naval Argentina, Alfredo Astiz, sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity. The man dubbed the "Blond Angel of Death" was found guilty in the case of torture, murder, and annihilation of force, the military government from 1976 to 1983.

As reported by the BBC, Thursday, October 27, 2011, in addition to Astiz, as many as 10 former members of the military and police were also sentenced for life for the same crime. They all worked at the Navy Mechanics School in Buenos Aires (Esma), which turned out to be the facility's secret torture and murder of the military government at that time.



A total of 5000 prisoners in that place, 90 percent of them declared dead. Some of them were killed by being shot, others were thrown alive from a ship into the Atlantic Ocean. More than 70 people who survived a witness in a court of Astiz.

Astiz also been tried in abstentia in France for the murder of a nun of the country, Alice Domon and Leonie Duquet, who disappeared in Argentina in 1977. Argentine human rights groups say about 30,000 people were killed, or lost due to their opposition campaign against leftist guerrillas.

In his defense, Astiz said all his actions is to protect Argentina from left-wing terrorism. He said the court it is a political revenge.
