Arab countries supporting the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty in the UN next week. Furthermore, the Palestinian Arabs will encourage membership to the 194 UN members.
Support from the Arab world was presented the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, in support of Palestinians at the UN meeting that was launched by Reuters, 13 September 2011. The meeting discussed the steps to be taken to the United Nations recognizes Palestine as a sovereign state.
"The Arab states have approved the filing of the recognition of Palestine as a state with Jerusalem the capital of the United Nations," said al-Thani, who is chairman of the committee of Palestine to the United Nations.
The Palestinian Authority decided to ask for support and recognition from the UN after the stagnant negotiations with Israel about independence. Palestinians demanded the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state comprising the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, all of these areas controlled by Israel since the 1967 Middle East War.
The plan, the Palestinian government will submit proposals on the admission to the UN General Assembly 19 September next. The EU will not recognize the Palestinians before listening to the Palestinian report.
Currently, the Palestinian position at the UN is only as observers. If it does not become a permanent member, at least the Palestinians can be a non-member countries, higher-level position of the observer. To obtain this position, the Palestinians must get approval from a majority of all members of the UN.
U.S. Objections
Palestinians seem to have a chance. The reason, according to a report on the UN website, as many as 124 countries have now recognized the sovereignty of Palestine and the UN membership. However, to become permanent members of the Palestinians must first through the approval of the UN Security Council.
But the United States, as one of the permanent members of the Security Council, seemed to mind. The U.S. veto would likely apply if the Palestinians accepted the UN as a permanent member.
Earlier this month, the U.S. has been lobbying for more than 70 countries to oppose the recognition of Palestine at the UN. They reasoned this would cause instability in the region.
The U.S. thinks the UN recognition of Palestinian state can only occur after an agreement with Israel, including the border issue. The U.S. insisted on continuing the peace talks between the two countries, in fact, negotiations stalled because Israel violated an agreement not to build Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories.
