Korean War Victims Compensation

A woman in South Korea (ROK) received cash compensation of 5,000 Won (Rp35.000) for the death of his brother during the 1950-1953 Korean War. This decision is a direct condemnation because the numbers were too small.

Quoted by news agency Reuters, Monday, October 17, 2011, South Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans pay the money after she was rejected compensation claims in court. Rejection due according to the rules, compensation claims must be filed no later than five years after the family members were killed.



According to the Human Rights Commission of Korea as a woman attorney who was not named it, her brother was killed on the battlefield in November 1950. This woman who was then aged two years, found out had an older brother who died in 2008 thanks to information from its neighbors.

Anti-Corruption Commission and the Civil Rights South Korea said the award of compensation is shameful and degrading state hero. The commission also urged the government to review it again. "We hope this case will lead to a better system in awarding compensation to families of war veterans living in misery," the commission said in a statement.

At least about 140,000 South Korean soldiers were killed and 130,000 were missing in the Korean War involving South Korea and North Korea. The war between the two countries are legally still ongoing because only ended with a ceasefire in 1953, not a peace treaty.
